On their debut album Temptation And Half The Truth, Mermaid Avenue present a collection of incredibly endearing new songs that you won’t be able to stop listening to. ”

Happy Mag

Overall, this is one of the best alternative rock debut albums I’ve heard for quite some time. Peter Clarke is a songwriter who has honed his craft, supported by a group of musicians that bring his songs to life in a synergistic way. Most importantly, you can imagine thousands singing along and, with such a wide array of influences, the creative well won’t be running dry anytime soon. Highly recommended, especially to alt. rock and country fans. VERDICT = 8.9 out of 10”

The Faulkner Review

Temptation And Half The Truth; the incredible new album from Brisbane band Mermaid Avenue. Ever since it dropped, we’ve been spinning it on repeat.”

— Happy Mag

Opening with Effigy a sense of sonic space is instantly created which flows throughout the whole album. With catchy backing vocals, hooks and a definite pop sensibility, these tracks are, for want of a better descriptor, easy listening, alternative rock with a country flavour. ”

Merging the sounds of each distinct era of alternative, some country and a certain melancholy in their delivery Mermaid Avenue has created a sound that will appeal to listeners for being both familiar and fresh.”

Divide & Conquer Music

Whether you’re single and ready to mingle, blissfully coupled up or in the process of ‘consciously uncoupling’ a la Chris and Gwyneth style, Mermaid Avenue’s new single Effigy is worth listening to.”

Music Is My Muse

Mermaid Avenue mix their indie rock and alt.country with a healthy dose of 90’s classicism and oz rock swagger on their debut record ‘Temptation And Half the Truth’.

Described as the missing link between The Beatles ‘She Loves You’ and The Cult’s ‘She Sells Sanctuary’ Mermaid Avenue’s debut single Effigy puts new relationships under the microscope with an indie rock swag addressing the dating or ‘warm up’ phase of a relationship – those uncharted waters between lust, and the potential of something more.

As the opener on their upcoming album, Effigy sets the tone for the tracks that follow, taking audiences on an all-encompassing journey through the cycle of a relationship: the good, the bad, and the ugly. “We wanted to make a traditional album – one you can play from start to finish. Lyrically, the album charts the ups and downs of relationships from first kiss to the ‘bliss’ of domesticity along with the darker themes of losing loved ones, lost time and jealousy”.

Since first cutting their teeth live in 2015, Mermaid Avenue have become a regular feature on the Brisbane scene driven by the prolific songwriting of singer Peter Clarke and musicianship of Darren Madeo (lead guitar), John Doyle (bass) and Anthony Judd (drums). In early 2018 they expanded their line up with the addition of keyboardist Marc Besselink formerly of Dutch neo-progsters Kramer.

The sessions for 'Temptation And Half the Truth' began in late 2016 and continued over the course of 2017 at The Barn Recording Studio in the Lockyer Valley. The album was produced by Steve Robin and mastered at the Chicago Mastering Service by Margaret Luther.

'Temptation And Half The Truth' is out now and available on Spotify, iTunes, Applemusic, Bandcamp, CD baby and many more.
